Have the Ultimate New York Winter Experience

It is busy, it is bustling, it is even a bit brassy, but New York City winter is also irresistible. Here are some tips to have the best time in New York City this (and every) winter season.

New York City winter lights

Plan Ahead: Do your research and get as many reservations on the books as early as possible. Tables at that new place(s) you want to try, rooms at the hotel in the midst of all the action, tickets to the show(s) you want to see…get it all in advance.

Come Prepared: The previous tip notwithstanding, expect long lines and crowded attractions. Dress in layers and bundle up warmly. It can get mighty cold outside as you visit many of the outdoor attractions, especially those that are prettiest at night.

Turn on the Glitz: Midtown Manhattan is the center of New York’s winter fete. Trek up trendy Fifth Avenue from 40th St to Central Park and see all the lights and glamour. Go to Saks Fifth Avenue’s light display, Tiffany’s dazzling diamonds, and the iconic trees at Rockefeller Center, the New York Public Library, the Empire State Building, Bryant Park, and others.

Make a List: Check it Twice: New York’s winter markets are charming venues worth exploring. They are filled with local artists and designers selling gifts and trinkets that you and your family will adore. Grand Central Terminal holds a unique Holiday Fair, in the stunning Vanderbilt Hall, focusing on socially responsible business and handmade craft gifts.

The wind-down of every calendar year is an exciting time in New York City. Come enjoy the post-Thanksgiving magical air; see the city transformed into a singing, dancing, sparkling Tinseltown.

Summer of 2019: Record Tourism in NYC

Times Square, New York City

Nearly 67 million people came to New York City in the summer months of 2019. That is close to two million more visitors than in 2018. It is also the 10th consecutive year of rising tourism according to Fred Dixon, the chief executive of NYC & Company, the city’s tourism marketing agency.

The surge in New York tourism is likely due to several high profile events, including the NYC Film Festival, WorldPride celebration, City Farm Summer, and others. The reopening of the Museum of Modern Art this month will also draw visitors to the city, Mr. Dixon said.

Those visiting the city are looking to have a good time. They want top-tier accommodations, prime experiences, and reasonable prices. As New York continues to offer a wide range of exciting opportunities, from the culinary to the cultural, the fashion to the fun, hotels like the Edison in Times Square, or the Washington Jefferson Hotel in the theater district and the Iroquois in Midtown offer ideal hospitality close to all the action. Hotel owner Shimmie Horn works hard to ensure that all guests enjoy all that New York City has to offer.

Go Italian at the Frederick

A year ago, Serafina Tribeca opened up at the Frederick Hotel.  Offering “authentic Italian fare set within an upbeat and energetic atmosphere,” guests can enjoy eating in or take out/room service directly from their hotel phones.

If “fresh clams and dente linguine,” go for something more traditional like a filet mignon burger.  The Serafina takes that to the next level by serving it with gorgonzola cheese and caramelized onions.  Serafina is also known for its Tartufo Nero pizza which comes with hand-picked Italian truffles.

If you do decide to eat in the actual restaurant, check out the décor; with select, brightly-colored paintings from Pato Paez the Argentinian-born NY artist’s beautiful depictions are testament to his “commitment to producing colorful work for people’s walls.”

The Latest Hot Spot: Primo’s

Nestled inside Shimmie Horn’s Frederick Hotel is Primo’s, “a veritable hot spot.”

On a recent Thursday night, the nostalgia-steeped bar was filled with hip downtown types, who lounged on velvet banquettes and sipped classic cocktails (try the “Double Dirty” martini, laced with white anchovy and piquillo pepper) at the marble bar. And while the Tribeca spot feels wholly original (where else can you play out Mad Men fantasies and rub shoulders with Jake Gyllenhaal?), the brothers [Noah and Aisa Shelley] insist that it’s a nod to the city’s great drinking dens of yore.

According to Noah:

Primo’s couldn’t exist without icons like Bemelmans We wanted Primo’s to similarly communicate the idea of a great city called New York.

And thanks to The Frederick, they got what they wanted.

The Frederick Hotel

Shimmie Horn’s Frederick Hotel has been featured in Vogue. With its new eatery opening at the beginning of the month, Primo’s has been slated to “bring considered downtown vibes to an area that hasn’t been known for its late-night hospitality since the Odeon defined the city’s after-hours scene in the 1980s.”

With the recent success of new businesses in the area, managing partner Aisa Shelley felt ready to take the plunge with this cool, funky new place. With interiors designed by Camilla Deterre, the place features a “mismatched terrazzo tile floor” within an Italian style art deco and Mediterranean coast.

There is a broad mirror creating an optical illusion if you’ve drunk a few too many and round tables with jewel-colored stools.  Daryl Nuhn is the wine developer, making the beverage  90 percent natural.  For those wanting to eat there you have a choice of going totally healthy (tons of veggies prepared all sorts of ways) or going back to your childhood for sandwiches and pasta.  Of course, no matter what your choice is (healthy or decadent) you simply will not be able to resist the “special pistachio-Pernod scoop in its affogato, with coffee from Brooklyn’s Variety” thanks to a joint project with Morgenstern’s!

Featuring the Frederick!

Historical meets modern; comfort and convenience; great customer service.  These seem to be some of the buzz words that come together with New York Triumph Hotel chain owned by Shimmie Horn. And that was recently mentioned again with a Time Out feature on The Frederick Hotel.

Time Out contributors Céline Bossart and Marion Bernstein in their article entitled ‘The best boutique hotels in NYC,’ described The Frederick as follows:

Originally opened in 1845 as the Gerard House, the Frederick Hotel has seen many iterations and notable guests over the years—it’s rumored that Abraham Lincoln took a snooze in the 1850s and that Vincent Gallo payed just $22 per week in the early 1980s. Now fully remodeled, the reimagined Frederick houses 130 thoughtfully-designed, vintage-meets-minimalist rooms and the three-story Serafina Italian restaurant which offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-room dining. 95 West Broadway (888-895-9400, frederickhotelnyc.com).
